Figure Out Your In-Home Prime Real Estate When Organizing
Did you know that you have areas in your home that are called “prime real estate?”
Prime real estate areas are those shelves, spaces and areas where to put the things you use every day. If you have clutter you are losing your prime real estate to nothingness which will waste your time and energy every day.
Like in a grocery store, you’ll find the things they want you to buy and that most people buy most often right at arms reach, right in front of you with no struggle to find and pull off the shelf. That’s their prime real estate, along with the “end caps” or the end of the aisle section and at the check out counter for that last minute grab purchase.
In your home, this means using your space, your real estate space on different levels.
Level 1: THE LOWEST SHELVES
These are for bulky and heavy stuff that you may rarely use. It’s also a good place so that you can pull big items out when needed without much muscle.
That also means, don’t put heavy things up high just because you rarely use them. First it’s hard to get them up there and then it’s hard to get them down and maybe dangerous if you don’t have the balance or muscle. Sadly these items may never be used again exactly because they are so hard to retrieve.
Level 2: MIDDLE SHELVES
These are your prime real estate shelves. They are good for things you want to see, get to quickly and easily and to help remind yourself to use.
In the kitchen, this would mean putting the healthiest food items where they’re most easily seen and accessed.
In a clothes closet, it’s the clothing you know you look good in, wear the most and enjoy seeing too.
In the linen closet, it’s the sheets and towels you use most often.
Level 3: TOP OR HIGH SHELVES
The high shelves are the right place for lightweight things that are used rarely or seasonally: winter sweaters in the summertime, flower vases and a few special holiday dishes for instance.
